. >>> let's get to the news here at 30 rock in new york city. the first presidential debate a matter of hours away. a new battleground poll released moments ago shows where the race stans in ohio, virginia and florida. acoring to the nbc news/"wall street journal"/maris poll, ohio has opened up a lead in ohio among likely voters. in virginia, the president's lead shrunk to 2 points, well within the margin of error. there's a statistical tie there. the president held a five-point lead just last month. in florida, romney closed the gap as well. he's statistically tied with the president there. last month, romney trailed the president in that state by five points. a tight race all the way around. new national polls show the race tightening with 34 days to go. head-to-head matchup here. this is nationally. president obama leading 49% to 46% among likely voters. again, within the margin of error and closer than it was two weeks ago. on the direction of the country, 40% say we're heading in the right direction. 53% say things are on the wrong track. 40% is the highest mark for this questio

'. >>> in syria today aleppo the largest city was rocked by four explosions this morning. killing at least 40 people. joining me now from cairo with the latest nbc news foreign correspondent ayman mohyeldin. what are we hearing to the victims and cause of that attack? >> well, andrea, we'll get to that about aleppo in a second but the latest development just happened right now coming out of turkey earlier this afternoon, a syrian artillery shell landed on the turkish side of the border killing five turkish citizens. that angered the turkish government. the prime minister says the syrian government will be held accountable for this and we also understand that turkish officials are now reaching out to nato to possibly exercise nato's article in which any member of nato that is attacked could respond and it's really just highlighting the sense situation on the turkish/syria border there after this deadly incident. the attack in aleppo you referenced really two different accounts coming out from inside syria. the syrian government, the official line from them, this was a terrorist attack, three s

's second largest city of cleveland. the study found that african-americans used early in person voting at 26 times the rate of white voters in 2008. the study used census tracks where the voting population is over 80% african-american. every one of those red dots on the map represent 50 early voters. ohio republicans were trying to end early voting 72 hours prior to election day except for members of the armed forces. luckily for all ohio voters, their efforts have failed. on friday a federal appeals court judge upheld a lower courts decision striking down the law. the three-judge panel ruled the 72-hour voting period should be open to all voters in the state, including members of the military. this is good news. some questions still remain. it's being report the the final decision could be up to individual ohio counties meaning 72-hour window we're talking about could still end in certain places in the state. ohio republicans can still file another appeal sending it to the supreme court. as of now, there's no word of that appeal. it is big. president obama needs ohio to win the electi

swing county is in another major city, if you will. it happens to be cincinnati. and of course, ohio is where both the president and mitt romney are. and on one hand, the president's going to hang out in columbus because he's trying to one up the score. that's a good democratic county. but cincinnati, it's a swing county, right down here. it's one that president bush carried by 23,000 votes. the president carried it by 21,000 votes. it's going to tell you a lot about what's happening in ohio by where that goes. and then moving on into virginia, it won't come as a surprise to folks that the big swing county is in the northern virginia area, since that's where all the growth has been. and i'm sure folks are wondering, is it -- well, let me move here. technology stalls a little bit. is it a loudon, a fairfax, a prince william? well, according to our numbers, it's prince william, and the county seat of prince william, that's manassas. the joke about virginia is when you drive on i-66 in virginia, the welcome center when you've entered the state of virginia, you have to drive 30 miles to
